Mental Health and Supportive Housing
Our behavioral health system is strained for those in mental health crisis. There is a shortage of resources and facilities. As a result, people have to wait for beds or mental health services. This has a huge impact on their progress toward getting healthy or out of mental health crisis which also affects their treatment and recovery. There are a number of other cascading effects that the shortage of beds and services produce such as overcrowding in our emergency rooms and jails which do not provide the appropriate setting to help someone with a mental health crisis.
For someone with a mental health condition, the basic necessity of a stable home can be hard to come by. The lack of safe and affordable housing is one of the most powerful barriers to recovery. When this basic need isn’t met, people cycle in and out of homelessness, jails, shelters and hospitals. Having a safe, appropriate place to live can provide stability to allow you to achieve your goals.

This is not a new topic, but one that still needs persistence and attention.
Many of the key issues facing Rochester revolve around Destination Medical Center (DMC). One of those topics is Public Transportation and building an infrastructure that can support growth. We need to think about Transit despite DMC because Public Transportation can bring benefits to our communities. Having a more defined regional transit plan could help revitalize some of our business districts, allow employers to tap into larger workforces, increase property values, and build economic revenues.
